SYSTEPHUS

Systephus is a durational performance exploring the potential of mythic praxis to realize transmedia realities. In this process the artist facilitates the creation and destruction of tablets from a finite source of clay that is continuously cycled through an inscribing machine. Over the  8 unique but reproduced tablets, the story of Sisyphus unfolds through inscribed portions of Camus’ The Myth of Sisyphus. These tablets are then dried and displayed until their medium must be recycled to continue the story. As the artist and the machine work together over multiple days in continual iterations, the clay medium disappears into their bodies and their environment leaving traces of the reprocessing.
